Emergency Generator Repair in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa and North Dakota
When a standby generator will not start, you want one call to make and a technician who knows the brand. Midwest answers 24/7, with a stocked parts inventory and a fleet of service vans.
Why It Matters
Why Timely Generator Repair Matters
Midwest Electric and Generator is a Factory Authorized Service Provider, and the company that sold and installed your generator is the one you call when something goes wrong. One number, one team that knows the brand, and no hunting for someone to fix it. Our technicians cover every part of the system: the automatic transfer switch that senses the outage, the battery that powers the electronics and cranks the engine, the fuel supply, and the controller and its fault codes.
Most no-start calls trace back to a handful of causes, and nearly all of them announce themselves first. A repair made when the warning shows is finished before the next outage, not during it, when every crew in the region is already busy.

Why Midwest
Rapid, Reliable Repair by Factory-Trained Experts
For more than 20 years Midwest has sold, installed and serviced generators across the Upper Midwest, and the technicians who repair them work for Midwest.
Factory Authorized Service Provider
Every repair is done by Midwest's own factory-trained technicians, trained in depth on Generac and the other brands we carry, never subcontractors or third parties.
Parts on Our Vans
An extensive parts inventory and a specialized fleet of service vans mean most repairs are completed on the first visit, with no wait for a part to ship.
Generac Prestige Dealer
Midwest holds Generac's highest dealer status, Generac Prestige. Generac is our primary brand; we also sell and service Kohler, Winco, Cummins and Briggs & Stratton and repair the other major brands, including units another company installed.
How It Works
Our Simple Generator Repair Process
Every repair visit follows the same three steps, so you know what is happening and what it will cost before any work begins.
One Call
Call the service line or send the fault code from your monitoring app. Give us the make, the model and the symptom, and we schedule the visit with the likely parts on the van.
Test Until We Understand It
The technician does not guess. We test until we understand the problem: controller history, battery and charger, fuel pressure under load, and the transfer switch.
Fix It, Then Test Again
You approve the quote first. After the repair, we test again to verify the fix, simulating an outage so the generator carries the house before we leave. Covered issues under your warranty are repaired free.
Emergency Service
Emergency Generator Repair, Around the Clock
A generator fails on the night of the storm, not on a weekday afternoon, so our service line is answered around the clock. Call 612-284-1550 and a technician who knows your brand takes it from there.
Midwest keeps a large inventory of repair parts and a specialized fleet of service vans, so you are not waiting days for a part to ship. During a regional outage, service members are scheduled first, and remote monitoring customers have already sent us the specific fault code, which gets the right part on the van before the technician leaves the shop.
We repair residential and commercial generators.
What We Fix
Common Generator Repairs
Battery failure is the most common service call we run, and the rest of the list is short. Our vans carry the parts for all of it.
Battery Failure
The battery powers the electronics that sense an outage and start the engine within seconds, and it slowly loses charge while the unit sits. Sulfation, a shorted cell, loose or corroded terminals, or a charger breaker left open after service will all leave you with a dead unit. We test the battery and the charger, and replace a battery past about three years.
Transfer Switch Problems
The automatic transfer switch senses when utility power is unavailable, signals the generator to start and moves the home onto generator power. If the engine is running and the lights are still out, the switch is where we look first. Never operate a transfer switch by hand without training; call us instead.
Fuel Supply
A natural gas or propane unit that cranks and will not catch, or stalls shortly after starting, is usually starved for fuel: a closed valve, a regulator that drops pressure under load, or an undersized line. We check pressure at the unit while it runs and correct the supply.
Fault Codes and Controls
The controller tells you what it saw. A yellow lamp is a warning such as AC Sensing Loss, Battery Charger Fault, Low Battery Voltage or Not In Auto; a red lamp is a shutdown such as Overcrank or Undervoltage. For a Low Oil Level or Low Oil Pressure warning, shut the unit off and call us. We read the history, fix the real cause and replace a controller whose board has failed.
Oil, Coolant and Block Heaters
Low coolant from a leak or a plugged radiator, a failed block heater, low oil pressure and a clogged filter all end in a shutdown, and a Midwest winter finds every one of them. We repair the leak or the heater rather than resetting the alarm, and we check the oil for the milky color that means coolant is getting in.
Snow, Ice and Enclosure Damage
Snow packed against the intake or exhaust vents will stop a generator, and ice, road salt, rodents and storm debris take their toll on wiring, sensors and enclosure hardware. We repair the damage and can fit a snow hood so the vents stay clear through the next storm.
Fewer Repairs
Most Repairs Are Preventable
Routine checks catch most problems before they become repairs: a battery nearing three years, a block heater that has quit, a plugged filter, coolant creeping low. An annual service from our factory-trained technicians catches those early and keeps your manufacturer and dealer warranties active, and a service membership adds priority scheduling and discounted repairs. Each Generac air-cooled unit Midwest installs comes with the 12-Year Power Plus Warranty: labor, travel, parts and major components included at no extra cost.

FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions About Generator Repair
Who do I call if I have a problem with my generator?
Call the company that sold and installed it. For Midwest customers that is the service line at 612-284-1550, one number for every brand we carry. If someone else installed your unit, we still take the call: we service Generac, our primary brand, along with Kohler, Winco, Cummins and Briggs & Stratton, and repair the other major brands too. Please do not open the unit and start tinkering; it is dangerous and usually turns a small repair into an expensive one.
Why will my generator not start?
Nine times out of ten it is one of four things: a battery that has failed or lost its charge, a control switch left in Off or Manual instead of Auto after service, a fuel supply problem, or low coolant or oil that tripped a shutdown. The technician tests each of them before replacing anything.
My generator is running but I have power. Is something wrong?
Usually not. After utility power returns, the unit keeps running for a few minutes to make sure the supply is stable, then the transfer switch moves the house back and the generator shuts down. If it keeps running much longer, or you see a leak or an alarm, set the controller to Off and call us.
What do the fault codes on the controller mean?
A yellow lamp is a warning and a red lamp is a shutdown. Common ones are Low Battery, Battery Charger Fault, AC Sensing Loss, Not In Auto, Overcrank and Undervoltage. Most warnings clear with a reset: Off, then Manual, then back to Auto after five minutes of running. If it does not start, or the code is Low Oil Level or Low Oil Pressure, shut it off and call the service line.
Do you offer emergency repair service?
Yes. The service line, 612-284-1550, is answered around the clock, with 24/7 support availability for a rapid response across Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa and North Dakota, from the technician team at your nearest hub. During a regional outage, service members are scheduled first.
How do I avoid repairs in the first place?
Keep the annual service, let the weekly exercise cycle run, keep snow clear of the intake and exhaust, and add remote monitoring so the unit reports a fault before the outage does. A service membership covers the annual service, with priority scheduling and discounted repairs.
